Avian Action at The Sanctuary Project
Taking a long evening drink tinkling with ice to a comfortable seat within easy viewing distance of the purple martin gourds; checking the action with binoculars; making notes on a little gourd plan; trying to count occupation, parents and nestlings - what a wonderful way to spend a quiet evening as the sun sets late and the purple martins jockey for position. . Our estimates have about 35 pairs successfully raising three nestlings each. Attrition along the way of course, but 35x2=70 + (2.5x35=87) = over 150 birds sweeping the skies for dragon flies and any other daring insects. Certainly our best season yet; and certainly our most entertaining one.
Amelia Mason - Animal Angel - (below left) she cannot resist saving anything with feathers that comes her way; it is hard living in a world where people insist they need to eat animals; but Amelia grabs and saves where she can. The Sanctuary Project lake gives them a fair and fighting chance. (Below right) Kip Ron & Savannah chasing muscovies. Of course, once they got out in the lake and the flat-bottomed boat started to go round in circles they forgot all about the ducks.
